Treyarch says Call of Duty: Black Ops III is “current-gen” only

Over the weekend, Activision launched the first trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the newest annual installment of the Call of Duty franchise from Treyarch Studios. Fans will remember the original Black Ops II debuted on the Wii U and despite somewhat intermittent support over the past few years, the game was at least fun to play on the Wii U. Now, it appears that Black Ops III will not be released on Wii U, similar to Advanced Warfare last year.

According to Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, while the game is a multi-platform game, it’s the first in the series to target new generation consoles only. Apparently the appellation “new generation” doesn’t include the Wii U.

There are no ‘ports’. The game is made on multiple platforms, it’s the beginning of a new generation and we’re showing it to you on all these platforms, to dispel some of the misconceptions about development. We’re working on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. That’s it.

When asked about the possibility of the game appearing on the Wii U, or PS3 and the Xbox 360, Lamia told journalists to refer to Activision, who stated that there are no further platform announcements at this time. While that particular wording doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Wii U version of the game should time or demand be great enough to accommodate, it seems as though the Call of Duty series is finally skipping out on Wii U.
